Chapter Twelve

Kinsley

I sit on a bench outside and wait for Dean. The air is warm and sticky, and I wish I had a pair of shorts instead of my thick leggings.

Shay and I text back and forth as she sends me pics of Midnight, happy back at home. I laugh, seeing her sprawled out in the middle of my queen-sized bed. She must love having it all to herself.

Shay: Are u already on the road?

Me: Not yet. Waiting for Dean. He’s sad.

Shay: :( We know that pain all too well.

Me: Don’t remind me. I’ll text u when we get closer- xoxo

I put my phone away just as Dean walks outside. He looks so lost and sad, his hands buried deep in the pockets of his jeans with his shoulders slumped down. I notice he does this often as if he’s defeated and beat down by life, unable to lift his head.

I won’t ask questions. I’ll give him the space he needs. If he wants to talk, I’m here to listen.

“Ready to hit the road?” I ask, keeping my voice light and my grin big.

“Yeah, let’s get out of here.” He walks fast, jogging almost, to his car, and I hustle to keep up.

Once in the car, he peels out of the lot like he’s gotta be somewhere.

“You okay to drive?”

“Of course I am. What kind of question is that?” Dean snaps.

“Whoa, I didn’t mean anything by it. Just wanted to check.”

The car slows, and so does his breathing as he turns onto the main road. “I’m sorry. I don’t mean to be a dick, and you don’t deserve it.”

“Don’t worry about it. You’re going through a lot.”

“Still doesn’t give me the right, but anyway, I just needed to get out of there. Which doesn’t even make sense because I don’t want to leave her here. I don’t fucking know. My mind is a mess.”

“I’m not surprised. My advice would be to make extra sure to take care of yourself. Take deep breaths, and tackle things one at a time. Take one day, one hour, hell, one second at a time- whatever helps you through and deal with your emotions as they come.”

Dean makes a face. “What if you feel a thousand emotions at once and can’t distinguish?”

“Feel them all. It’s the only way to heal.”

Dean glances over at me as he merges onto the highway. I tuck my loose strand of hair behind my ear, suddenly self-conscious.

It’s not just my education or my training that taught me such wise advice. It was my own damn life experience.

“I know what it's like to leave a parent behind, to lose family, to lose a piece of yourself in the process. And honestly, the best way to move forward is to just go through it.” I feel his eyes on me between watching the road, and I pray my cheeks don’t betray me. I’ve told no one about my childhood besides Shay. But for some reason, I feel compelled to keep going.

“Both of my parents died when I was only ten.
